2009:
Those of you who frequent nude beaches will be disappointed to hear that nude bathing has been banned in Cadiz municipality.
The PP governed town is famous for its miles of natural beaches, covered in white sand and dunes. It was a favourite spot for those fleeing from the madding crowd. However, local police there have began telling bathers who are enjoying the sun in their altogether that they will be fined 750 euros or even arrested next time they are spotted naked.
The new ordinance has caused uproar at the Spanish National Federation of Nudist Associations. Officials, which threatened to take legal action if the municipal government doesn’t rescind the decree in 30 days. “We are not committing any type of crime,” the federation said in a statement. Mayor Teófila Martínez explained that the reason she proposed the ban was because of her concerns about children at the beaches, adding that she wasn’t legally bound to provide an area for nudists.
