Angela Merkel has argued the way out of the crisis for Europe is to create a political union. I do think the most prosperous future for Europe is one in which the European Union has become a more politcal (and democratic) entity, but her remarks probably couldn't have come at a worse time. Europe has never been more divided than right now, and Merkel's remarks only serve to fuel populist politicians with anti-European campaigns.
